SAVE OUR SPIRE (SOS) –
The spire of St. John’s Church, Nurney needs immediate repair. Its condition is very serious. Nurney parishioners are determined to raise the money and do the work with all speed. The people are few and the cost is huge €120K. We need help, please. Could you spare a gift to save this great landmark in the barrow valley and in Nurney village. The rector will be in Nurney Church from 11am till 6pm on Sat next 5th Nov, hoping to receive many gifts from well wishers and kind helpers everywhere.
TOGETHER WE CAN DO GREAT THINGS
This is a motto decided upon during millennium year 2000 by all our local National Schools, Our Lady Queen of the Universe, St. Brigid’s. St. Mary’s, Nurney, Garryhill, Ballinkillen and Newtown. The motto stands for the annual national school’s service in St. Mary’s Church at harvest time to thank God for his many blessings and to help people in need.
This year we worshipped together on Friday 7 th Oct and the particular theme was Helping the Hungry, referring to the forthcoming visit to Zambia by students from the Presentation de la Salle College. The students who will go to Zambia, together with Ms Jenny Maher, gave the National School pupils a presentation of what they would do and how and why. The participating schools sang lovely songs, made joyful music, prayed thoughtful prayers and read suitable poems and readings. It was an impressive and moving occasion. The national schools were able to hand over to Presentation de la Salle the fund they had collected to help[ the visit to take place, There was wonderful joy and commitment. The poor and sick and people with learning difficulties in Mongu, Zambia, will be the beneficiaries. Together, indeed, we do to great things.
CHURCH OF IRELAND (Anglican or Episcopalian)
Dunleckney Group of Parishes
The Church of Ireland group of parishes that serves the Bagenalstown area is called the Dunleckney group because of its history. Originally the Church of Ireland church stood next to the catholic church at Dunleckney, as can still be seen in the ruins. Even then, during penal times, the relationship between the local churches was one of friendship and trust.
The building and opening of the canal, the Barrow Navigation, in the 1790’s caused the town to grow fast. The community outgrew Dunleckney church and, as with St. Andrew’s moved into a new Church in the town. The town’s design partially reflected, and still reflects, Walter Bagenals’s dream of a small Versailles in Ireland, planned around the river frontage. St. Mary’s church in the town was accordingly completed and opened in 1844, with the town added in 1850.
The Church of the Good Shepherd Lorum near Ballinkillen stands on an ancient Christian site. St. Laserian paused a Lorum in his way from Rome via Wexford as he headed towards Old Leighlin. There is a fragmentary cross-shaft at Lorum and also the foundation of a former round tower. The present church is a fine building of the 1830’s with a tall spire added later.
St. John’s Church, Nurney stands on the hill of Nurney and is “An Urnaí” the place of prayer. That says it all, so long is Nurney’s history. It is a natural place for prayer and contemplation as one surveys from it a long stretch of the Barrow Valley and further away Sliabh n mBan and the Comeraghs. The High Cross of Nurney should not be missed in the field behind the churchyard. The present church of St. John is about two hundred years old. It is an elegant and well proportioned country church with a spire that now requires urgent and substantial repairs. Accordingly an appeal SOS, Save our Spire, is being launched.
Dena Wynne will be in the church to receive gifts from 11 to 5pm on Sat 5 th Nov, hoping that there will be a generous response to the need for 120,000 euros immediately.
St,. Peter’s Church, Killedmond is on the lower slope of Mount Leinster below Rathanna and towards Borris. It is in a location of great peace and beauty and is itself a fine granite structure consecrated in 1846. It is quite hard to find, sheltering behind an attractive avenue of yew trees beside Killedmond cross roads.

On Wednesday we begin the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. We must ensure that it is just that, in both our private and our public prayer. We shall do something suitable locally, as we always do. But we need also to remember that the gospel of Christ is simply not credible to the wider world unless the various churches are seen to have good relationships with one another. In today’s Gospel reading Jesus heals the daughter of the Canaanite woman. The woman has urged Jesus strongly to help her , foreign though she is. ‘Even the dogs’, she says, ‘eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.’ The outcome is that Jesus ministers to the foreigners as well as to his own people: ‘both– and’ not ‘either – or’. This is the challenge for us.

Today’s Gospel is the feeding of the five thousand. Jesus can make a little go a long way amongst those in need. Let that spur us on in our giving week by week as well as in response to special appeals.
DUNLECKNEY GROUP OF PARISHES 24th July 05
For this week’s Gospel Jesus’ parables are small pictures of life in farming, fishing and baking. What could be simpler and what could be more challenging?
DUNLECKNEY GROUP OF PARISHES – 17th July 2005
Today’s parable of the wheat and the reeds in the Gospel reading is crystal clear for us all in its meaning. As the wheat harvest approaches let us apply the lesson taught by Jesus to every aspect of our lives.
DUNLECKNEY GROUP OF PARISHES 10th July 2005
This Sunday we have as the Gospel reading the Parable of the Sower. Amongst other things this reminds us that we are a community that depends mainly on farming and agricultural services. We ask God’s blessing on all that we undertake to do, and we pray for vision and courage as we look and plan ahead.

Two things this week deserve our warm support:
The school fete on Sunday afternoon (12th) will as always provide welcome funds for St. Mary’s National School. This is the more necessary this year when we may be incurring heavy development costs. Apart from fund-raising, the event is most enjoyable socially.
Secondly there is the Tir na nOg
coffee morning in Long’s on Fri 17th Jun. This is well worthy of support in the cause of maintenance and improvement of the Tir na nOg memorial garden. Many thanks to all who so kindly help in this

Monday is St. Laserian’s Day. It is a good opportunity to reflect in thankfulness on all our blessings, not least the long tradition of faith and Christian hope in this place. Laserian himself was an interesting man with a remarkable life-story. But, more important, he and his colleagues brought to this region our imperishable faith is the risen Christ, and that alone should make us truly thankful.
DUNLECKNEY GROUP OF PARISHES 10th April 05
This weeks gospel reading is the story of what happened on the road to Emmans. There can be no story more striking or remarkable to inspire our faith in the risen Christ. Let familiarity never dull our sense of the power and wonder of the gospel.

DUNLECKNEY GROUP OF PARISHES 16th Jan 05
On Tues 18th Jan we move into the Annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, a week which is just that. The reason for its place in the calendar is that it ends with the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul (25th Jan). St. Paul is the father of Christian Mission, and without unity of heart and mind Christians cannot hope to influence the wider world. Hence the need for an annual week of prayer. Let us make good use of it.
DUNLECKNEY GROUP OF PARISHES 9th Jan 05
This weekend, 8th and 9th January, we are making our special donations to the Indian Ocean Disaster Fund organised by the Bishops’ Appeal. There is huge emphasis on the ingathering of harvest in this community now. There are the rallies at Fenagh and Rossdillig, to remind us of how it used to be done. There will later be the opportunities to thank God in our Churches for the blessings of harvest. An essential part of this should be our generosity to the poor of the world, whose plight is so sharply brought before us each day. May we put aside money now, so that during the harvest thanksgivings we can give with a truly open hand to those whose hunger is ever present
DUNLECKNEY GROUP OF PARISHES 5th September 04
